To be true to one's self is the ultimate test in life. To have the courage and sensitivity to follow your hidden dreams and stand tall against the odds that are bound to fall in your path. Life is too short and precious to be dealt with in any other fashion.” – Flo Hyman

Chuck Rey joins Miami as a new assistant coach for the 2013 season. Rey comes to the RedHawks from Winthrop, where he spent the past four seasons as an assistant.

While at Winthrop, Rey helped the Eagles to a Big South regular season championship in 2011. As the offensive coordinator, he led Winthrop to either first or second-place finishes in a multitude of offensive categories. He trained two Big South Players of the Year and one Big South Setter of the Year.

Prior to his time with Winthrop, Rey spent a season as a volunteer assistant at the University of Minnesota, working on setter training and offensive game planning for a team that was ranked sixth in the nation during the 2008 season. While at Minnesota, Rey was fortunate to work with 2008 and 2012 Olympic Silver Medalist, Lindsey Berg, as she returned to Minnesota to rehabilitate a minor knee surgery. In addition, he helped train a Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year.

Rey is very active in promoting the sport. He operates the popular volleyball coaching website, CoachRey.com, which has up to 15,000 visitors each month. Articles from his website have been published or sourced by USA Volleyball, the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA), The Art of Coaching Volleyball, and a variety other volleyball publications. As a member of the USA Volleyball, Rey was a featured speaker alongside John Kessel (USA Volleyball Director of Sport Development) at a USA Volleyball Coaches' Clinic. He is also a three-time featured speaker at the AVCA Convention and is the founder and chair of the First Time Attendees Committee. Rey is recognized for his in depth statistical analysis and co-created (with AVCA Hall of Fame Coach, Mike Hebert) a new volleyball statistic called In Play Efficiency (I.P.E), which is now used in many top statistical programs.

The opportunity for Coach Chuck Rey at the University of Minnesota volleyball program has been priceless.

My Passion is Volleyball

Prior to Coach Rey's opportunity at the University of Minnesota, he was the Assistant Coach at Georgia Southern University and the Head Coach of Georgia Southern University's Men's Club Team. He is well known for his hard work, dedication, enthusiasm, and his successful background gives him the ability to create a comfortable, yet professional working environment within a university as well as recruiting. His overall objective is to help a program move towards a common goal of excellence with both the University and the Student-Athletes' best interests in mind.

Coach Rey fell in love with volleyball as a teenager near Chicago, IL and has returned to his first love after a storied international business career. His business career of ten years has taken him all over the world in search of the next best product to sell via direct marketing. He has interacted with many Fortune 100 companies and has sold millions of products sourced primarily from Asia by direct mail, catalog, infomercial and the Internet.

Throughout his years in business, Coach Rey found solace in coaching volleyball. He would spend his nights and weekends coaching at the junior high school and high school levels as well as Junior Olympic clubs. Coach Rey decided it was time to follow his passion in coaching and make a complete career change to coach collegiately. Since that time, Coach Rey never second-guessed his career change and is excited about the opportunities ahead.
